Is a 40-metre or 50-metre yacht better for ten guests?

Short answer

Neither length is automatically better. Compare the extra usable accommodation and facilities with the additional total cost. Two published listings illustrate why the relationship is not linear.

Analyst interpretation: these examples challenge the shortcuts “longer means more crew” and “newer means cheaper.” They do not establish a market-wide size premium or a winner.

For three couples and four children, test a five-cabin allocation first: three double cabins for the adults and two twin cabins for the children. Then consider whether a sixth cabin would materially improve the holiday—for a nanny, a guest requiring separate accommodation, or more flexible sleeping arrangements.

Do not classify an accompanying nanny or specialist as crew simply to make the headcount work. Ask the operator to confirm how every person is treated under the yacht’s actual certification and operating permissions.

What should justify paying for more yacht?

Require a specific answer for each proposed upgrade:

  • An additional suitable cabin, not just additional berths.
  • A better route between the assigned cabin and shared spaces.
  • More useful shaded seating or separate social areas.
  • A service arrangement that supports the group’s actual schedule.
  • A tender and boarding arrangement that solves an identified access problem.
  • A material improvement in the planned holiday—not length as an end in itself.
