Is cancellation insurance a substitute for better contract terms?
No. Compare the contract and insurance as separate layers. A contract sets obligations between the parties; insurance responds only within its own terms and limits.

| Protection | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Contractual refund or remedy | Trigger, amount, responsible party, deadline and enforcement route |
| Trip cancellation/interruption insurance | Covered reasons, insured persons, eligible payments, limits and exclusions |
| Cancel-for-any-reason option | Eligibility, purchase deadline, reimbursement percentage and cancellation timing |
| Medical/evacuation protection | Geographic scope, assistance arrangements, limits and exclusions |
| Charterer liability protection | Whether the charterer’s particular liabilities require separate cover |
NAIC explains that cancel-for-any-reason coverage generally provides partial reimbursement and carries conditions, including timing requirements. MHG’s yacht-charter insurance information likewise describes reimbursement of eligible non-refundable costs for covered reasons, subject to policy terms and limits. Neither supports assuming that every charter cancellation will be reimbursed. (content.naic.org)
Before paying the deposit, ask the insurance adviser how the household’s payments, accompanying guests and total charter value would be treated. Obtain the policy wording and proposed limits—not just a brochure or a generic assurance that the trip is covered.
