Should you use an international brokerage, a specialist broker or book directly?
Select the engagement model before selecting the brand. Ask who searches for alternatives, who represents the owner, who contracts with the charterer and who is responsible when something changes.

- Treat membership as one diligence input, not a substitute for examining the engagement.
The distinction between retail brokerage and charter management is substantive: Burgess describes its charter-management service as negotiating charters for owners and managing the process. CYBA separately sets out expectations for brokers and central agents, including calendar maintenance, operational information and change notifications. These are different functions even when one business performs both. (burgessyachts.com)
The “best fit” assessments below are editorial recommendations. They are not claims that every provider in a category has the same capabilities.
International charter brokerage
- What to engage it to do
- Source alternatives, coordinate the booking and manage the charter relationship
- When it fits
- A cross-border brief requiring several yacht options and an escalation route
- Principal limitation to test
- Brand reputation does not establish the assigned individual’s knowledge of your shortlist
- Questions before appointment
- Who is our lead broker? When did they inspect these yachts or meet the current crews? Who covers absences?

| Provider or engagement model | What to engage it to do | When it fits | Principal limitation to test | Questions before appointment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| International charter brokerage | Source alternatives, coordinate the booking and manage the charter relationship | A cross-border brief requiring several yacht options and an escalation route | Brand reputation does not establish the assigned individual’s knowledge of your shortlist | Who is our lead broker? When did they inspect these yachts or meet the current crews? Who covers absences? |
| Independent or destination-specialist broker | Provide a focused search and direct adviser relationship | A defined cruising area or an organiser prioritising continuity | Corporate independence alone does not establish impartial remuneration or sufficient operational support | What is your relevant recent experience? Who handles problems outside office hours? What inventory can you source beyond your own relationships? |
| Central agent or charter manager | Supply owner-side calendar, yacht and commercial information | You have identified a specific yacht and need authoritative answers from its commercial representative | Its role includes securing bookings for the represented yacht | Who advises the charterer separately? Who approves terms and confirms operational changes? |
| Luxury travel adviser or concierge plus yacht specialist | Coordinate the yacht with flights, hotels and land arrangements | The holiday is part of a more complex family itinerary | Responsibility can become unclear at the handoff | Name the yacht specialist. Who owns the combined schedule? Which business receives money and signs each agreement? |
| Direct operator or single-yacht business | Offer a defined vessel and operating programme | You deliberately want that yacht or a tightly specified experience | The engagement may offer no meaningful alternative-yacht search | What happens if the yacht is unavailable? Who holds funds? What independent contract and payment checks will be accepted? |
| Expedition specialist | Add destination-specific operations, guides, permits and contingencies | Remote exploration rather than a conventional resort-coast holiday | A yacht fee alone may not describe the expedition scope | Who holds permits? Which specialists are included? What are the evacuation and weather alternatives? |
| Buyer-paid research reviewer | Test proposals, normalise costs and maintain an evidence trail | A family office wants independent quality control alongside its broker | Review is not yacht operation, safety certification or legal advice | What is verified, by whom and by when? Are referral payments accepted? What remains outside scope? |
Expedition planning is a distinct service rather than a decorative label: EYOS describes voyage planning, permit applications, specialist guides and aviation support among its operational services. IAATO also identifies permitting and contingency planning as substantive requirements for Antarctic yacht visits. Those capabilities should be scoped separately from ordinary yacht sourcing. Does association membership establish independence?
Treat membership as one diligence input, not a substitute for examining the engagement. CYBA membership is individual, and its standing rules distinguish members from non-member subscribers to its electronic contract. The rules also address professional-liability insurance, written financial commitments and protection of the charterer’s interests. (cyba.net)
Ask for the named adviser’s membership status and insurance details. Separately request disclosure of owner representation, central-agency relationships, referral arrangements and any direct buyer fee.
This research does not establish a universal current commission percentage. Do not assume that booking directly removes a particular percentage from the price, or that a small brokerage is necessarily less conflicted than a large one.
