How far ahead should you start, and how much work should you allow?

Short answer

Separate booking lead time from the time needed to make a defensible decision. Burgess recommends beginning at least six months ahead and notes that popular yachts can book a year in advance. Its guidance also explains that very early enquiries can encounter owners who have not settled their own schedules. These are brokerage recommendations, not universal booking deadlines. • Do not confuse later booking with lower risk.

For your internal calendar, reserve two to four weeks for research and approval once the brief is stable, allowing more for unusual accessibility requirements, complex contracting or several countries. This is a suggested working allowance—not a measured industry average or assurance that suppliers will respond within it.

These are task-budget assumptions for planning your workload. They are not evidence that every charter takes this long.

Do not confuse later booking with lower risk. IYC’s first-half 2026 market commentary reports clients committing later and paying more attention to value and itinerary flexibility. That is a supplier’s market observation, not evidence that your preferred family yacht will remain available or become cheaper. (iyc.com)
