How do I verify yacht charter bank details and avoid payment fraud?

Short answer

Independently verify payment instructions before every material transfer, especially after any change. The FBI advises confirming payment requests through a separate trusted route and not using a telephone number supplied in a potentially fraudulent message. (fbi.gov)

Our recommended payment control:

  1. Match the invoice and beneficiary to the agreed transaction structure.
  2. Obtain the verification contact independently of the payment email.
  3. Call that contact and confirm the instructions.
  4. Require a second authorized person to approve the transfer.
  5. Stop and reverify any changed account or urgent redirection.
  6. Record who checked, who approved and when.
  7. Confirm receipt through the established channel.

Ask separately who holds the funds and when they may be released. Words such as “client account,” “escrow” or “stakeholder” should prompt questions about the actual arrangement, not end them.

Stop-payment rule: unexplained beneficiary differences or pressure to bypass verification should block payment until resolved. A convincing invoice or familiar email thread is not a substitute for the independent check.
