Stage 2: How should you compare superyacht charter proposals?

Stage 2 of 7See it in the plan
Short answer

Ask every supplier to answer the same questions, then compare yachts rather than presentations. Use one coordinating organizer and one shared version of the brief.

Checklist: request comparable evidence

  • Identify the yacht precisely, including any previous name that could cause duplicate entries.
  • Obtain written availability for the exact dates, with the confirming party and timestamp.
  • Record any option expiry, including its time zone, conditions and whether accepting it creates an obligation.
  • Request the complete price breakdown and the proposed contract form, version, special conditions and addenda.
  • Obtain a general arrangement plan, cabin specifications and proposed guest allocation.
  • Request confirmation of the people expected to lead the charter: captain, chef and senior hospitality contact.
  • Ask who represents the owner, who coordinates your booking, who will hold funds, and how each adviser is compensated.
  • Ask whether the broker has personally inspected the yacht or met its current crew, and when.

Prices and availability can change; Northrop & Johnson explicitly qualifies its published charter information on that basis. Treat a listing as a starting point, not your booking confirmation. (northropandjohnson.com)

What should the comparison spreadsheet contain?

Use the following columns for each yacht:

Decision fieldWhat to record
AvailabilityExact dates, source, confirmation date and option expiry
Family fitCabin allocation, boarding route and unmet requirements
CostExpected final spend, higher-spend scenario and cash-payment schedule
Operational fitCruising hours, access limitations and fallback itinerary
Evidence qualitySupporting document, date, responsible person and outstanding question
Contract exposureIssues requiring clarification, amendment or specialist advice
RecommendationFits, conditional fit, reject, or insufficient evidence

Keep suitability separate from evidence completeness. In this desk’s proposed method, an attractive but undocumented feature remains unconfirmed; it does not earn the same status as a requirement supported by current evidence.

Should you wait for a last-minute charter deal?

Northrop & Johnson reported shorter booking lead times in its June 15, 2026 market commentary. That is a supplier-reported market observation, not evidence that a particular yacht will become cheaper or remain available. Our recommendation: do not delay a hard-to-match family brief solely in anticipation of a discount. (northropandjohnson.com)

Stage output: a two- or three-yacht decision board, plus one consolidated request for missing information.
