Will yacht Wi-Fi or Starlink be reliable enough for work?

Short answer

Ask about the service plan and onboard network, not just the presence of an antenna. Starlink’s maritime information distinguishes ocean service and priority-data arrangements, including changes in service after a data allowance is exhausted. (starlink.com)

Give the yacht a realistic workload: simultaneous video calls, VPN access, large uploads, streaming and the number of devices.

Then request:

  • Current service provider and plan.
  • Coverage relevant to the proposed route.
  • Included data and additional-data authorization.
  • Recent performance observations, with location and date.
  • Guest-network coverage in the cabin or office you will use.
  • Backup connectivity and the person responsible for it.
  • The plan for a genuinely time-critical meeting.

Our recommendation: do not make an irreplaceable business obligation depend on an untested promise of “high-speed Wi-Fi.” Schedule a trial with the yacht’s team where feasible and agree a practical fallback, such as a suitable shore location.

Do not mistake a successful speed test on one day for a service guarantee for the whole charter.
