Can more than 12 guests charter a superyacht?

Short answer

Yes, appropriately certified yachts can carry larger parties, but spare beds do not establish permission. The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency describes REG Yacht Code Part A as covering relevant commercial yachts carrying no more than 12 passengers; the REG Part B framework addresses yachts carrying 13–36 passengers. These are specific regulatory frameworks, not a universal rule for every flag and itinerary. (gov.uk)

Key points from this page
  • Never solve a capacity problem by informally relabeling a guest as crew.

For any party approaching or exceeding the yacht’s stated limit, request confirmation of:

  • Permitted passenger number for the proposed operation.
  • Overnight accommodation.
  • Any separate restrictions on day visitors or events.
  • Treatment of children and accompanying household staff.
  • Required commercial and local operating permissions.

Never solve a capacity problem by informally relabeling a guest as crew. Ask the manager to confirm the lawful arrangement for every person who will be aboard.

If one yacht cannot accommodate the party properly, compare a suitably authorized larger vessel with a two-yacht arrangement. For the latter, establish transfers, meals, activities and whether everyone can legally gather aboard the same yacht.
